Visualize Burlington in 3D is a project being run through the Emergent Media Center at Champlain College devoted to modeling and texturing Champlain College campus for Google Earth using Google Sketchup. The primary goal of the project is to help the college better visualize the effects of new construction and development on the neighboring community. I work on a team of 7 other students and once we are each assigned a building to work on, the following process is initiated.

Process

Stage 1: Obtain the footprint

The footprint for the building is retrieved from Burlington, Vermont City Hall. This is used as a starting point for the model.

Stage 2: Reference Images

At least 75-100 reference images are taken for each building

Stage 3: Modeling

The footprint is outlined in Google Sketchup and reference images are used to get the most accurate results possible.

Stage 4: Texturing

Tileable textures are created as a base for each building. Other features are typically generated from reference images or painted in photoshop.

Stage 5: Upload to Google Earth

Model and Texture are both uploaded to Google Earth and await approval (typically 1-2 weeks)
